About the Position
The Director of Institutional Giving will work closely with CPD/A leadership and program teams to build institutional partnerships in support of the network’s mission to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. As a member of the development team, this individual will be responsible for achieving annual revenue goals by developing and executing a comprehensive plan for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding foundation, government, corporate, union, and other institutional funders in support of priorities to advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda.
We estimate that candidates will have about 12-15 years of relevant experience, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not years of experience.
This position will report to the Director of Development and will supervise a team of four.

Primary Responsibilities
The Director, Institutional Giving will:
- With the Director of Development, design and execute the annual and long-term fundraising plan for institutional giving.
- Manage a portfolio of foundation donors, developing solicitation and stewardship strategies, and maintain a schedule of contacts with institutional donor representatives.
- Coordinate donor meetings and identify opportunities to gather intelligence, strengthen relationships with key institutional donors and champions, and represent CPD/A to identify and cultivate new partnerships.
- Oversee the writing and editing of grant proposals and reports, and work with CPD/A’s finance team on the preparation of proposal budgets and financial documents.
- Collaborate with CPD/A staff to pursue new institutional fundraising opportunities, including government entities.
- Work with the Director of Development to maintain institutional donor revenue projections.
- Oversee data management on institutional donor contacts, relationships, and their giving histories in our CRM, Salesforce NPSP.
- Collaborate with the development team to create customized communications and other written materials that prepare CPD/A fundraisers for meetings with institutional donors.
- Mentor, support, and supervise a team of four, including a Grants Manager, two Grant Writers, and a Senior Manager of Grants Administration.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Demonstrated experience and success in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts from a variety of funders, including at least 5 years of supervisory experience;
- A deep commitment to social, racial, and economic justice, and an understanding of the challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and communities of color.
- Proven track record of successful fundraising;
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse staff across a large organization;
- Significant experience in grant writing and editing;

Salary and Benefits
CPD/A is a unionized workplace. This is a supervisory position not included in our bargaining unit. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $105,000-$120,000.

The primary vehicle for Partners In Health’s (PIH) movement-building work is “PIH Engage,” a network of volunteer community organizers who form teams across the United States, Mexico, and Peru. The Senior Community Organizer will help form a small team committed to building a movement for the right to health through PIH Engage’s advocacy, fundraising, and community building campaigns in the United States. They will be primarily responsible for coaching and training existing PIH Engage teams as well as the recruitment and onboarding of new team coordinators in communities where teams do not currently exist. Initially, the Senior Community Organizer will work closely with the Manager of Grassroots Strategy, the Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator, and a volunteer Network Leadership Team, and, over time, may have the opportunity to take on significant additional responsibility.

- Strengthen the capacity of PIH Engage teams in the United States (50%)
- Create systems to develop leadership of over a dozen volunteer coaches and several dozen volunteer team coordinators

About Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice
The overarching goal of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice is to lift up and support emerging leaders across the country to drive change that will solve complex social problems. Two schools at the City University of New York—the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at The City College of New York and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies—are establishing a national institute to recruit, develop and connect diverse leaders for social change who can imagine and implement visionary solutions for the enormous challenges we face in the 21st century. Utilizing cohort models and larger scale outreach programs, the institute will prepare emerging generations of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) leaders for successful careers in the social change sector through study and exploration of social justice organizing traditions, ideology, literature and history; as well as offering teaching and mentorship from leaders who have robust experience in social change.

In addition to its in-person training programs, Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice will also be virtual and national, with a robust web platform, including online mentoring and career services along with the ability for participants to engage the curriculum online. Outside of the core programs, the institute will be equipped with robust wraparound services that enhance and are integrated with core programs: Mentorship, Career Services, Community Building / Communal Care, Alumni Program.
Pending formal approval as an institute this spring by the CUNY Board of Trustees, Leadership for Democracy and Social Change will benefit from a home at the City University of New York, the largest public university system in the United States with more than 250,000 students, mostly people of color and immigrants from lower income communities. CUNY students will be among the many outstanding candidates for training and support by the new institute. Within CUNY, CCNY and CUNY SLU are the right home for Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice. In 1847, The City College of New York was founded as a radical effort by the people of New York to make higher education available to all, regardless of income, religion, ethnicity or background. It was the first free public university in the United States, and today is the oldest CUNY campus. In 2018, the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) became the newest CUNY campus, established through the collaboration of twenty-six labor and community organizations to train adult and traditionally-aged students for labor and social justice leadership. CCNY and SLU serve among the most diverse student populations in the nation, and their missions align squarely with the ambitions of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice.
While housed at CUNY, the institute has its own Advisory Board and a distinct mission and structure. CCNY will provide the physical and fiscal home, central finance and human resource services, and a portion of the administrative support for the institute until it achieves greater scale. The 30-person Advisory Board includes leaders who straddle the social justice and academic worlds. The institute projects an initial 3-year budget of approximately $15 million, of which approximately half has been raised to date. The institute anticipates significant growth in staff and budget over the next 5 years.
About the Position
The Executive Director will carry ultimate responsibility for the success and impact of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice, ensuring that it delivers on its mission of preparing and nurturing social justice leaders to drive change that will solve complex social problems. The Executive Director will have the opportunity to leverage the resources of a major university to collaborate in the creation of new infrastructure, influential curricula and programs that support social justice across the country, and other initiatives and partnerships that can promote equity, access, participation, and human rights.
Reporting to the Dean of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership as well as to the Co-Founders of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice, who chair the Institute’s Advisory Board, the Executive Director of the institute will be a visionary leader who serves as a catalyst to leverage best management and leadership practices to guide the organization’s development; and develops relationships and resources to promote an inclusive, enabling environment for staff and emerging social justice leaders.
The Executive Director will have in-depth experience and knowledge of social change movements, a deep racial equity analysis, a successful track record as an effective leader and manager and, ideally, practical grounding in leadership development and training programs as well as an understanding of how to navigate higher education institutions. The Executive Director will have the singular opportunity to co-create the institute working closely with internal colleagues across the university community, staff, community organizations and labor leaders, and partner organizations.
