The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action is seeking a Director of Institutional Giving.
About CPD + CPDA
The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We work with nearly 50 affiliates in over 30 states and Puerto Rico to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations that envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.
About the Position
The Director of Institutional Giving will work closely with CPD/A leadership and program teams to build institutional partnerships in support of the network’s mission to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. As a member of the development team, this individual will be responsible for achieving annual revenue goals by developing and executing a comprehensive plan for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding foundation, government, corporate, union, and other institutional funders in support of priorities to advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda.
We estimate that candidates will have about 12-15 years of relevant experience, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not years of experience.
This position will report to the Director of Development and will supervise a team of four.

Primary Responsibilities
The Director, Institutional Giving will:
- With the Director of Development, design and execute the annual and long-term fundraising plan for institutional giving.
- Manage a portfolio of foundation donors, developing solicitation and stewardship strategies, and maintain a schedule of contacts with institutional donor representatives.
- Coordinate donor meetings and identify opportunities to gather intelligence, strengthen relationships with key institutional donors and champions, and represent CPD/A to identify and cultivate new partnerships.
- Oversee the writing and editing of grant proposals and reports, and work with CPD/A’s finance team on the preparation of proposal budgets and financial documents.
- Collaborate with CPD/A staff to pursue new institutional fundraising opportunities, including government entities.
- Work with the Director of Development to maintain institutional donor revenue projections.
- Oversee data management on institutional donor contacts, relationships, and their giving histories in our CRM, Salesforce NPSP.
- Collaborate with the development team to create customized communications and other written materials that prepare CPD/A fundraisers for meetings with institutional donors.
- Mentor, support, and supervise a team of four, including a Grants Manager, two Grant Writers, and a Senior Manager of Grants Administration.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Demonstrated experience and success in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts from a variety of funders, including at least 5 years of supervisory experience;
- A deep commitment to social, racial, and economic justice, and an understanding of the challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, and communities of color.
- Proven track record of successful fundraising;
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse staff across a large organization;
- Significant experience in grant writing and editing;
- Organization, efficiency, and timeliness in project management and delivery, meeting preparation, and facilitation;
- Ability to communicate complex issues, discuss funding opportunities with donors, and relay information to a variety of stakeholders;
- Ability to travel to achieve stated objectives when conditions allow.
Salary and Benefits
CPD/A is a unionized workplace. This is a supervisory position not included in our bargaining unit. Salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years’ experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $105,000-$120,000.
We have a generous benefits package, including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 15 vacation days your first year, 10 sick days per year, 13 paid holidays per year, and contributions to individuals’ 401K plans.

The primary vehicle for Partners In Health’s (PIH) movement-building work is “PIH Engage,” a network of volunteer community organizers who form teams across the United States, Mexico, and Peru. The Senior Community Organizer will help form a small team committed to building a movement for the right to health through PIH Engage’s advocacy, fundraising, and community building campaigns in the United States. They will be primarily responsible for coaching and training existing PIH Engage teams as well as the recruitment and onboarding of new team coordinators in communities where teams do not currently exist. Initially, the Senior Community Organizer will work closely with the Manager of Grassroots Strategy, the Grassroots Advocacy Coordinator, and a volunteer Network Leadership Team, and, over time, may have the opportunity to take on significant additional responsibility.
Responsibilities:
- Strengthen the capacity of PIH Engage teams in the United States (50%)
- Create systems to develop leadership of over a dozen volunteer coaches and several dozen volunteer team coordinators
- Lead these systems by providing necessary coaching, training, and communications to diverse constituencies
- Grow the PIH Engage network in the United States (30%)
- Refine and lead the implementation of PIH Engage’s recruitment and onboarding plan
- Represent PIH to external audiences, including at conferences, in university settings, and other contexts
- Develop and execute campaign strategy (20%)
- Design PIH Engage’s fundraising and community building campaign structure by collecting and analyzing input from PIH Engage volunteers and synthesizing it with PIH’s organizational priorities
- Lead PIH Engage teams and coaches to generate new levels of resources and broaden our base of donors to support the mission of Partners In Health
- Develop training materials, presentations, and work plans to increase the knowledge base and capacity for PIH Engage teams
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years of experience community organizing, movement building, or large-scale volunteer mobilization programs in a professional or volunteer leadership capacity
- Experience delivering training and coaching to varying group sizes (one-on-one, small groups, 100+ people)
- Ability to effectively lead others toward shared purpose in a complex, fast-paced environment, with excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience running grassroots fundraising campaigns
- Experience running grassroots advocacy campaigns and supporting volunteers, interns, and staff
- Team player with the ability to deliver on projects within a deadline

About Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice
The overarching goal of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice is to lift up and support emerging leaders across the country to drive change that will solve complex social problems. Two schools at the City University of New York—the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at The City College of New York and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies—are establishing a national institute to recruit, develop and connect diverse leaders for social change who can imagine and implement visionary solutions for the enormous challenges we face in the 21st century. Utilizing cohort models and larger scale outreach programs, the institute will prepare emerging generations of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) leaders for successful careers in the social change sector through study and exploration of social justice organizing traditions, ideology, literature and history; as well as offering teaching and mentorship from leaders who have robust experience in social change.

In addition to its in-person training programs, Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice will also be virtual and national, with a robust web platform, including online mentoring and career services along with the ability for participants to engage the curriculum online. Outside of the core programs, the institute will be equipped with robust wraparound services that enhance and are integrated with core programs: Mentorship, Career Services, Community Building / Communal Care, Alumni Program.
Pending formal approval as an institute this spring by the CUNY Board of Trustees, Leadership for Democracy and Social Change will benefit from a home at the City University of New York, the largest public university system in the United States with more than 250,000 students, mostly people of color and immigrants from lower income communities. CUNY students will be among the many outstanding candidates for training and support by the new institute. Within CUNY, CCNY and CUNY SLU are the right home for Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice. In 1847, The City College of New York was founded as a radical effort by the people of New York to make higher education available to all, regardless of income, religion, ethnicity or background. It was the first free public university in the United States, and today is the oldest CUNY campus. In 2018, the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) became the newest CUNY campus, established through the collaboration of twenty-six labor and community organizations to train adult and traditionally-aged students for labor and social justice leadership. CCNY and SLU serve among the most diverse student populations in the nation, and their missions align squarely with the ambitions of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice.
While housed at CUNY, the institute has its own Advisory Board and a distinct mission and structure. CCNY will provide the physical and fiscal home, central finance and human resource services, and a portion of the administrative support for the institute until it achieves greater scale. The 30-person Advisory Board includes leaders who straddle the social justice and academic worlds. The institute projects an initial 3-year budget of approximately $15 million, of which approximately half has been raised to date. The institute anticipates significant growth in staff and budget over the next 5 years.
About the Position
The Executive Director will carry ultimate responsibility for the success and impact of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice, ensuring that it delivers on its mission of preparing and nurturing social justice leaders to drive change that will solve complex social problems. The Executive Director will have the opportunity to leverage the resources of a major university to collaborate in the creation of new infrastructure, influential curricula and programs that support social justice across the country, and other initiatives and partnerships that can promote equity, access, participation, and human rights.
Reporting to the Dean of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership as well as to the Co-Founders of Leadership for Democracy and Social Justice, who chair the Institute’s Advisory Board, the Executive Director of the institute will be a visionary leader who serves as a catalyst to leverage best management and leadership practices to guide the organization’s development; and develops relationships and resources to promote an inclusive, enabling environment for staff and emerging social justice leaders.
The Executive Director will have in-depth experience and knowledge of social change movements, a deep racial equity analysis, a successful track record as an effective leader and manager and, ideally, practical grounding in leadership development and training programs as well as an understanding of how to navigate higher education institutions. The Executive Director will have the singular opportunity to co-create the institute working closely with internal colleagues across the university community, staff, community organizations and labor leaders, and partner organizations.
Essential Responsibilities
The Executive Director will:
Provide Strategic/Visionary Leadership

Work with the Advisory Board and staff to lead the institute in setting overall direction and priorities and developing and implementing programmatic and organizational strategies and goals;

Ensure that the organization develops and delivers a distinctive and high-quality experience for participants, taking into account the perspectives of emerging leaders, movement organizations, and organizations in the wider leadership development field;

In partnership and close consultation with CUNY and its staff, lead the institute's programmatic work, fundraising, communications and external relations, financial management, administration, operations, and human resources; ensure sound financial, operational, and administrative policies are in place and in practice; develop and administer budgets;

Enhance and sustain a highly collaborative workplace culture that reflects the institute's values; Ensure open and clear channels of communication; Employ transparent decision making; nurture and support a team that is passionate, knowledgeable, and flexible;
Lead Organization's Startup

Leverage Communications, External Relations and Fundraising

Position the institute and its programs effectively within the academic units of the Colin Powell School and CUNY SLU;

Financial Management

Lead financial planning, implementation, and management, including budgeting and forecasting; Manage the long-term financial stability of the organization;

In partnership with the founding directors as well as CUNY staff, develop an annual development strategy that includes fundraising events, donor cultivation program, and fundraising appeals; Identify opportunities and secure revenue from a wide range of funding sources;
Program Management

In partnership with staff, facilitate the development and implementation of curricula, programs, projects, and initiatives;

Identify and develop opportunities to connect the Institute’s work to other academic and co-curricular programs at the Colin Powell School and CUNY SLU;

Develop a thoughtful and ambitious plan for growing and scaling programs for the institute to have maximum impact in the sector; Regularly assess the institute’s initiatives and programs and use data to guide decision-making;
Ideal Experience and Qualifications
Candidates for the position should possess the following skill set and base of experience:

A passion for the institute’s mission and a demonstrated commitment to social justice and civil rights; A solid understanding of the diversity and complexity of movements for social change; Deep racial equity analysis;

A minimum of 10 years non-profit management experience, including direct experience in community, labor or social movement organizing or policy advocacy; Problem-solving skills that facilitate thoughtful decision making;

Successful experience leading the growth of a project or organization; Start up experience is a plus;

Capacity to navigate the complexities of a major university and able to leverage the synergies among the institute’s programs and the faculty and staff of the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership and the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies;

Familiarity with at least some of the sectors that the institute will prioritize, including labor, progressive policy and advocacy and movement organizations, as well as other leadership intermediaries; Substantive depth in at least one of the institute’s areas of curriculum development;

Founded by key New York State community organizations, issue coalitions and economic experts, our goal remains: to transform New York’s regressive tax system into a progressive model that truly funds the needs of our communities and to transform New York’s economy so that it works for the many, not the few wealthy and well connected. IONY has 100s of organizations and coalitions representing diverse issues, geographies and constituencies at the table, making coordination and communication critical.
Our 2021 campaign was a critical first step, resulting in historic firsts such as the Excluded Workers Fund and the largest tax increases on New York’s wealthy in decades. But now, as New Yorkers head into a defining election year across gubernatorial and other races, we have a chance to shape even further the next decade of tax, investment and economic policies while we build the power of the people statewide.
The coalition coordinator works with organizational partners to develop and execute coalition strategy and facilitates each coalition partner’s participation in coalition work, and is hosted by Citizen Action of New York and the Public Policy and Education Fund. This is a full-time position starting immediately. Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Convene and facilitate coalition partner organizations to develop and execute a strategy to advance a campaign.
- Recruit coalition partners.
- Lobby, and recruit coalition partners to lobby, direct and grassroots, on behalf of the coalition. Manage and coordinate relationships with elected officials.
- Regularly communicate campaign updates to coalition partners.
- Create or organize the creation of campaign materials, talking points, organizing toolkits, digital tools including websites as needed, lobbying materials, research reports, polling, and other materials as needed.
- Oversee the execution of coalition legislative, communications, and organizing strategies.
- Organize lobby days, actions, media coverage and other campaigns activities on behalf of the coalition and/or coalition partner organizations.
- Ensure that coalition work centers the needs and leadership of directly impacted people.
- Ensure that coalition strategy is based in grassroots power-building and leadership development.
- Ensure that coalition strategy advances a progressive worldview.
- As needed, participate in fundraising for the coalition from mid and high-level donors and foundations.
- Works in partnership with campaign consultants as needed.
- This role is currently not a supervisory position, but may evolve with the work into supervision of staff.
Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of professional experience working on grassroots organizing campaigns, issue-based campaigns, legislative campaigns required.
- Highly organized with demonstrated success developing and advancing programs and campaigns.
- Demonstrated success leading a legislative campaign.
- Ability to engage a variety of stakeholders including advisory groups, coalitions, forums, and elected officials.
- Demonstrated success in setting priorities, shaping processes, and developing infrastructure that creates strong and efficient advocacy efforts.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and coalition building skills. Excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. Experience navigating cross-organizational partnerships. Strong ability to work with a variety of personality types and work styles.
