Why this Tool for this Moment

Before the current global pandemic crisis began, we were already being attacked, not just as workers, but as mothers and fathers, tenants and homeowners, patients and debtors, caregivers, students and community members, and so many other aspects of our identities. We were living on the edge, one paycheck away from financial ruin, while corporations and billionaires increased their wealth. Millions were homeless, we owed billions in student loans, had tenuous access to medical care and couldn’t even get paid time off when we were sick or to care for loved ones. Communities of color were particularly under siege, facing not only all these realities to a greater degree, but on top of them, the daily threat of violence from a racist system. The global pandemic has magnified and deepened all of these problems. While companies like Disney are laying off 100,000 workers, leaving them without health insurance or money for rent, they are of course still planning to give $1.5 billion to shareholders.

We know what comes next - city, state, and federal governments, corporations and politicians across our country will call for austerity and concessions from workers and our communities in response to COVID-19. We must be ready to organize together at the local level and bring our combined efforts nationally. We must stand, arm in arm, as sisters and brothers, and build a movement to transform our world, for us and for future generations.

Mapping our opportunities to build to mass action

How can we come together? We need concrete tools to fight back. We know that over the next five years, contracts covering ten of millions of workers will expire nationwide. Long before that, governments and companies will be demanding re-openers on contracts to renegotiate.

We propose a simple idea: let’s use the natural alignment of contract expirations and reopeners around the country to make common good demands in every sector of the economy and geography of the country. Imagine the energy, excitement and movement we will create if dozens of common good campaigns mirrored, amplified and built on the strikes of the last few years, including UTLA in Los Angeles, AFSCME 3299 at the University of California and teachers and support staff in Chicago. What if this was happening all over the country? Imagine if hundreds of community groups and unions engaged in overlapping campaigns and potential strikes over coordinated common demands, building on those issued in response to this crisis, such as those from the United Teachers of Los Angeles, the Chicago Teachers Union and their allies and the Massachusetts Teachers Association and Boston Teachers’ Union to stop evictions and foreclosures, provide sick pay and cease all detentions and deportations by ICE. These could be combined with militant action like the home occupations in California and May Day 2020 rent strikes launching today across the country. Imagine if the combination of common good demands and actions painted a picture and told the story of the world we want to create in contrast to corporate and political demands for austerity.

With this in mind, the Bargaining for the Common Good (BCG) network has undertaken a new project to support and connect activists nationwide. Today, May Day - International Workers' Day - we are officially launching an ambitious effort to collect and map as many union contract expirations as we can across the United States. We plan to overlay this data with community and worker organizing campaigns and budget cycle information to create a powerful tool for our collective work.

Check out the video above that previews the map and some screenshots to give you a sense of what we are creating. You can also read more about the mapping project and BCG's work in Stephen Lerner’s piece What is Not to be Done in The American Prospect.

We know the rich and powerful corporations are already planning to consolidate their wealth, control and power on the other side of this pandemic. It is our job and responsibility to organize now and prepare for ferocious battles that will define the future of our country and world.

The world we knew before COVID-19 is quickly passing. We are seeing incredible acts of hope, love and generosity, and a dedication to the collective - the common good. We need to build on this energy to confront those that seek to further systemic inequality and racism - this map from Bargaining for the Common Good is an essential tool in that effort. When we work together, we have the power to transform our world into the one we deserve.
