Matthew Mayers
Matthew Mayers is the founder and chair of the board of advisors for the Green Workers Alliance. He has over 20 years’ experience in the labor movement, where he has helped organize state workers, independent home care providers, sanitation workers, school bus drivers and many others. His first environmental work was thirty years ago when he volunteered with the New York City Department of Sanitation Office of Recycling as a freshman in high school. More recently, as the lead strategic organizer with the Teamsters, he built a coalition with community and environmental organizations to oppose a corporate-owned landfill in a working-class community in Los Angeles and support creating green jobs through increased recycling. Earlier in his career he spent six years organizing state employees without collective bargaining rights in Texas and Missouri. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and lives in Washington, DC with his wife and daughter.
