Sanctuary for Families is New York's leading service provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. Every year, Sanctuary empowers thousands of adults and children to move from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive range of services. We provide a range of wrap-around services to help survivors rebuild their lives in the aftermath of abuse, and work to end gender violence through three key strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our services are available in 11 locations throughout New York City.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Project Assistant for the Orthodox Jewish Matrimonial Initiative (OJMI) provides litigation and related support to the project's staff attorneys, in addition to client case management in furtherance of the project's social outreach and advocacy initiatives. The Project Assistant may research relevant legal issues and assist in the drafting or compilation of documents. The Project Assistant may facilitate, organize, and coordinate programs and community outreach events under the direction of project staff. The Project Assistant also offers comprehensive, compassionate, holistic, culturally and religiously competent support to clients of OJMI. Reports to the Director of the Orthodox Jewish Matrimonial Initiative and Director of Matrimonial/Economic Justice Project

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists project attorneys handling cases for Orthodox Jewish victims of gender violence in all aspects of family law/matrimonial litigation support and case preparation including drafting and editing legal documents, writing correspondence, evidence gathering, organizing, maintaining case tracking systems, and serving papers.
  • Performs direct client advocacy; conducts intake interviews to screen and assess Orthodox Jewish potential clients for legal services and other needs; refers clients to appropriate internal and external service providers.
  • Performs duties such as drafting, research, filing court documents, and other administrative tasks including, data compilation, word processing, tracking and organizing office digital and paper filing system
  • Helps build and maintain the project's website
  • Represents Sanctuary for Families/OJMI on task forces and other political and advocacy committees outside the agency
  • Collaborates with service providers and other advocates within and outside of the agency to secure best results for Orthodox/Jewish clients
  • Maintain relationships with other service providers and religious leaders within the Orthodox Jewish community
  • Assists attorneys in organizing trainings on the intersection of matrimonial law and serving Orthodox Jewish victims
  • Organizes and conducts outreach and education about gender violence in Orthodox Jewish communities in the New York City metropolitan area
  • Provides case management and resource access for Orthodox Jewish clients
  • Performs any other department or agency-related duties as directed by supervisors
  • BA, paralegal certification, or equivalent work experience required
  • Yiddish or Hebrew fluency a plus
  • Matrimonial or Family law experience or interest preferred
  • Strong knowledge of Orthodox Jewish Communities within the New York City Metropolitan Area
  • Must be comfortable conducting outreach in Orthodox Jewish communities and institutions and advocating for clients within religious institutions and community-based organizations serving the Orthodox Jewish community
  • Excellent oral advocacy, communication, research, and writing skills
  • Excellent problem solving, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, initiative, and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated with an ability to multi-task, prioritize and problem-solve
  • Ability to work independently in a self-directed manner and as a part of a team

Budgeted Salary: $45,000 - $47,000 annually

Work position is currently Hybrid; must be able to meet job location schedule obligations

Vaccination Policy: Proof of vaccination or proof of first dose with scheduled 2nd dose within 30 days is required.
