The Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A) work to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We currently work with more than 50 partner organizations in 35 states, Puerto Rico, and D.C., and build the strength and capacity of democratic people’s organizations to envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position

We seek an energetic, rigorous, creative and experienced Senior Manager of Strategic Organizing to join CPD/A’s Base-Building Team and support bold, transformative, power-building organizing programs at CPD/A affiliates. The priority for this role in 2020 is to ensure that a key set of grassroots, affiliated, community organizations are supported in driving long-term base-building work through civic engagement and voter participation over the course of 2020.

This support will include:

  • Strengthening affiliates’ membership models and leadership ladders;
  • Recruiting, placing and supporting lead organizers and organizing directors;
  • Developing and sharing strong models for electoral relational organizing programs and long-term base-building through electoral fieldwork.

Primary Responsibilities

The Senior Manager of Strategic Organizing’s primary responsibilities will include:

  • Providing intensive, sustained support to two Midwest affiliated grassroots organizations to build integrated voter engagement programs, raise required resources, staff appropriately, and take advantage of opportunities for growth and engagement in their organizations;
  • Working closely with 3-5 other affiliated grassroots organizations in strategic regions to launch strong political and organizing programs;
  • Recruiting and supporting the leadership of a next generation of leaders of these organizations through supporting leadership pipelines within the CPD/A network;
  • Engaging with CPD/A’s Civic Engagement team to center the CPD/A’s long-term base-building goals.

A strong candidate will have:

  • Significant experience as an organizer and institution-builder;
  • Deep alignment with CPD/A’s theory of change and commitment to build strong people’s institutions;
  • A track record of effectiveness in campaigning, electoral engagement, base-building, staff and member training and leadership development, and building and sustaining coalition and ally relationships;
  • Some experience with other activities central to building new organizing efforts such as fundraising and communications.

Job Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice issues and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low and moderate income people;
  • At least 8 years’ experience in progressive campaigns with community-based organizations;
  • Experience as a supervisor, developer of organizers, and institution builder;
  • Strong track record in base-building, campaigning (issue and electoral), and leadership development;
  • Ability to cultivate and work deeply with diverse organizations and partners;
  • Experience working in and organizing in immigrant communities, communities of color, and low and moderate income communities;
  • Excellent writing, training, and communication skills;
  • Results-focused, team-oriented, organized and responsive;
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly (3-4x month) for site visits, trainings and affiliate engagement as well as occasional internal staff meetings.
