The Green Workers Alliance (GWA) is a project of PowerSwitch Action (formerly Partnership for Working Families). We are organizing solar installers and wind turbine technicians nationally using an online-to-offline model as we campaign to dramatically raise job standards in the field and increase investment in the green sector. We are organizing workers for more and better green jobs, building an organization with multiracial member leadership, and elevating workers voices in some of the most critical climate fights. Our work will help win economic justice, combat climate change, and achieve a just transition from fossil fuels. 

We are beginning ground operations in Virginia, where we will be organizing solar installers, particularly in rooftop solar, and working with labor, community and environmental allies on a comprehensive campaign targeting end-users of renewable energy projects. 

We are seeking an organizer in Virginia to work on both field and online organizing and help us develop our end-user campaign in coalition with a diverse set of allies.  

 

Responsibilities

The organizer will help drive our efforts in Virginia to build a membership base, develop leadership, and ensure that member voices are leading on our decision making and campaign work. The organizer will also work closely with GWA’s executive director on building a coalition of groups in the state to support our end-user campaign.

The organizer will engage in outreach to green workers (particularly in rooftop solar) and those who aspire to work in the field.  One week the organizer could be at a solar installation worksite talking with workers and in another week, those workers could be attending a shareholders meeting, or engaged in direct action against mega-utility companies. Responsibilities include:

  • Solicit membership through a combination of on-line and workplace and home visits.
  • Mobilize, turn out and engage membership
  •  Develop organizing skills of members.
  • Identify, recruit, train and develop leaders.
  • Working with the executive director, build coalitions with Virginia community, labor and environmental organizations.
  •  Develop various communication systems to effectively reach members and workers in the field.
  • Help scale up the digital organizing strategy.  
  •  Help co-create the internal participatory membership engagement processes

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • At least two years of experience in field organizing
  • Spanish fluency strongly preferred
  • Campaign planning experience, both labor and community side
  • Experience working through a racial equity lens
  • Ability to both think creatively and implement effectively.
  • Work effectively in team settings, as well as independently.
  • Effectively prioritize and multi-task assignments and responsibilities.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, often including nights and weekends.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, auto insurance that covers business driving, and an automobile for business use.

 

Compensation and Location

This is a full-time position. We offer a competitive starting salary at $62,400 to $75,000 (depending on experience) and generous benefits, including covering full health benefit premiums (health, dental and vision) and a 401k plan with an employer contribution

The position will be based in northern Virginia with extensive travel to other parts of the state and occasional travel to other parts of the country.

To represent and assist the SEIU-NFFWU in organizing; to take responsibility for major campaigns and to act in a leadership role with respect to program and other staff; to perform advanced training for organizers, staff, and worker leaders of NFFWU; and to design and implement organizing goals of NFFWU.

Primary Responsibilities:

Performs a wide range of duties as assigned by the Union, including but not limited to the following:

  1. Manages large turf or multiple small campaigns including organizing, comprehensive campaigns, strike actions, and political mobilization/action.

  2. Works with field staff and coordinates aspects of the campaign including vision, strategy, timeline, communication, community outreach, and politics.

  3. Authority to hire staff, discipline or effectively recommend the same.

  4. Directs a small team of organizing staff including scheduling, assigning turf, debriefing, evaluating and training.

  5. Develops and implements training for staff and worker leaders on the campaign to further develop skills and understanding of the campaign.

  6. Evaluates staff on their performance while on the campaign.

  7. Can oversee management of the campaign data.

  8. Performs other duties as required.

  9. Must be available for travel with overnight stays required.

  10. Long and irregular hours.

Education and Experience:

  • Three to five years of work in labor union and/or progressive organizing.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and leading organizing campaigns.

  • Previous experience with the labor movement or other advocacy organizations preferred.

  • Must be able to act and organize time with extreme independence.

  • A high level of judgment, ability to take initiative and work independently; must be able to work with elected leaders, worker leaders, and staff in complex and sometimes political situations.

  • Must be able to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines.

  • Reports to the Organizing Coordinator and/or Organizing Director.

  • Excellent writing, verbal and analytical communication skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of organizing and political campaign strategies.

  • Ability to develop and train staff and worker leaders in the skills needed for the campaign.

  • Knowledge of organizing campaign database management tools such as VAN, Action Network or other similar applications. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs.

  • Ability to write and proofread campaign communications materials.

Physical Requirements:

Work is generally performed from a field office setting or other location to complete the required assignments of the position. Long and extended hours and some overnight travel may be required.

TURN champions the interests of California’s residential utility customers by advocating at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the state Legislature, and other forums. TURN promotes policies that provide affordable, reliable and safe telecommunications, electric and gas service, promote least-cost green energy solutions; support public input into decisionmaking; and enhance accountability of the regulators, telecommunications carriers, and the utilities. TURN advocates on behalf of all California consumers, with a special focus on fighting to ensure affordable access to essential utility and broadband services for low-income households, communities of color, immigrants, and rural communities. TURN seeks a Digital Equity Project Manager to join our consumer advocacy staff, with a focus on digital equity, inclusion and telecommunications policy of critical importance to California’s residential telecommunications customers. The Digital Equity Project Manager will be part of TURN’s Race & Equity Policy unit and will work in partnership with and under the supervision of TURN’s Director of Race & Equity Policy. The Project Manager will have the opportunity to serve as the team lead on advancing our statewide digital and equity inclusion initiatives with a primary focus on the organization’s San Gabriel Valley efforts in the first two years.

As the project lead for TURN’s place-based digital equity and inclusion work in Southern California, the Project Manager will serve as a liaison to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and State Legislature and will also serve as a point of contact to our digital equity work in the San Joaquin Valley.

 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The Project Manager will be responsible for the following four priority areas:

1. Coalition-Building & Relationship Management with Community Organizations

a. Actively participate and engage in Digital Equity coalition meetings across the San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles County, San Joaquin Valley and statewide as necessary

b. Carry out tasks and tactics developed in coalitions such as survey dissemination, event planning and organization (e.g. hosting town halls)

c. Develop and deliver presentations to coalitions at coalition events

d. Mobilize community advocates and members to join appropriate coalitions, remain engaged, provide public comment and testimony to various decisionmakers

 

2. Community Engagement & Capacity-Building Trainings

a. Develop materials, tools and resources for trainings such as presentations, factsheets and videos

b. Prepare and deliver training presentations to various audiences

c. Understand information provided by TURN’s Consumer Advocate in order to appropriately engage community advocates and direct service providers

 

3. Technical Assistance & Communications Support

a. Develop and deliver presentations for conferences and convenings

b. “Translate” regulatory and policy documents and information for community-based network consumption

c. Write and edit material for traditional and social media consumption (e.g. op-eds, blog posts, social media posts, memes, etc.)

 

4. Project Management and Team Liaison

a. Manage multiple aspects of TURN’s Digital Equity campaign, meet deadlines, delegate tasks and hold team members accountable

b. Serve as liaison between and among TURN’s Telecom , Organizing, and Race and Equity Policy Teams in order to ensure all departments are working coherently and cohesively with respect to TURN’s Digital Equity efforts

c. Contribute to cross-team efforts such as presenting updates at relevant team meetings, contributing to drafting and/or editing CPUC proceeding documents and other policy documents (e.g. comments, testimony, letters of support)

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

TURN is seeking a Digital Equity Project Manager who can demonstrate experience and aptitude in as many of the following areas as possible:

• 3-5 years of relevant experience in nonprofit advocacy, coalition building, community organizing, capacity-building and policy issues

• Understanding of the political and non-profit landscape in the San Gabriel Valley and greater LA County;

• Exceptional relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholder groups;

• Experience organizing community groups and hosting community events;

• Passion for TURN’s mission of advocating for telecommunications and broadband consumers

• Commitment to achieving economic and racial justice, and experience working in multiracial and multilingual organizations;

• Strong written and oral communications skills;

• Ability to write clearly about complex issues with minimal supervision;

• Excellent organizational skills;

• Ability to work on multiple projects under mandatory deadlines;

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Understanding of telecommunications regulatory policy at the CPUC and Federal Communications Commission (FCC);

• Understanding of the telecommunications (e.g. landline and wireline telephone, mobile phone, broadband and internet service) industry;

• Bilingual Spanish/English; bicultural and biliterate in Spanish strongly preferred.

 

POSITION LEVEL / COMPENSATION & RETURN TO WORK POLICY

Annual salary range for this position is $85,000-100,000 and includes a comprehensive benefits package which includes full medical, dental, and vision coverage (100% paid for employees and 75% paid for spouse/partner and dependents); 401K with employer contribution; and generous vacation time. This position is based in the San Gabriel Valley. TURN has a temporary office space in Alhambra, CA. Candidates must be open to a hybrid (virtual/in-person) work situation.

TURN management prioritizes the health and wellness of staff and continuously monitors the public health context in order to provide guidance to staff with respect to in-person work and meetings. The Project Manager must be available for at least 1 in-office day and 1-3 in-person community meetings per week, so long as this is deemed safe by all participants. Once the COVID crisis subsides, The Project Manager position will continue to be a hybrid work position with occasional travel required.

*FLEXIBILITY IN POSITION LEVEL: Please note, if you do not meet all of the qualifications, we encourage you to apply. TURN is open to hiring someone at the Project Coordinator level and if brought on at this level the salary range is $70,000-85,000 plus comprehensive benefits package.
