POSITION: 

Community Organizer

DESCRIPTION:

New Virginia Majority is looking to hire a full-time community organizer who will recruit, engage, activate and retain formerly incarcerated people and their loved ones as members, develop their leadership, and work with our lead organizer to help build community-based leadership teams that we call ‘right to vote clubs.’

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build strong relationships and identify and develop leaders into clear membership roles. Timely and aggressive follow up with leads generated by field efforts including one-on-one meetings, and tabling activities (adhering to physical distancing), and online recruitment
  • Mobilize and track engagement of members and activists at various events and field opportunities in database.
  • Support staff in maintaining robust presence on all digital platforms including email, social media and website, producing compelling, timely content
  • Support digital campaigns strategies to grow online membership and engagement of our online supporters in taking action.
  • Support building graphics for campaigns
  • Help drive social media, email, online advertising strategy
  • Provide support to leaders.
  • Familiar with the criminal justice reform sector either personally or through professional experience.
  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Description:  The ACE Director for the Asian American Pacific Islander Civic Engagement (ACE VA) program is a project of New Virginia Majority. The ACE Director will build AAPI community power through civic engagement, community organizing and coalition work with AAPI partner organizations. ACE is part of NVM’s overall effort to build power and win social, racial, economic, immigrant and environmental justice at the local, state and national levels. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • To build AAPI power in Northern Virginia through:
    • Deep community organizing with working class Asians in Northern Virginia.  Building local and state campaigns to win critical demands, including housing and healthcare. 
    • Alliance building and support to strengthen existing or emerging local AAPI organizations.
    • Civic engagement to increase citizenship, voter registration and/or conscious voter turnout. 

Additional responsibilities:

  • ACE Program evaluation and reporting 
  • Represent ACE/NVM at national and funder meetings 
  • Supervise ACE organizers - including shared community outreach. 
  • Provide vision, leadership, and clear purpose for project 
  • Perform other duties as required including occasional special assignments with New Virginia Majority

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Committed to New Virginia Majority’s mission; 
  • At least 4 years paid full-time organizing experience; 
  • Demonstrated ability running community or labor and/or electoral campaigns. 
  • Experience organizing Asian working class communities.  
  • Strong commitment to economic, racial, and gender justice; Preferred: Ability to speak one or more Asian languages especially Urdu, Nepali, Bengali, Vietnamese, or Mongolian. 
  • Works well in challenging environment both independently and as part of a team; 
  • Ability to prioritize and problem solve efficiently and independently; 
  • Takes initiative, has excellent communication and time management skills; 
  • Ability to take give and take direction and constructive feedback
  •  A valid driver’s license and access to a car.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Salary is competitive from $60,000 to $70,000, commensurate with experience.  Excellent benefits package, including health, vision, dental, and stipends for phone and transportation.

Reclaim the Block seeks to add capacity to our team with a handful of new positions. These roles will support our two current campaigns: to #DefundPolice through the Minneapolis City budget process, and to #ChangeTheCharter through a ballot vote this November that would allow us to begin the process of transitioning away from the Minneapolis Police Department. 

Our anchor organization, Black Visions, simultaneously seeks to hire for additional positions; see this document for those descriptions and more information.
