National Civic Engagement and Politics Manager

About the Position:

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action (CPD/CPDA) is seeking an experienced electoral organizer to run a sophisticated training and support program for political staffers of our affiliates around the country. The CE and Politics Manager will support our affiliates to develop and implement their political plans (c3 and c4), develop and coordinate gatherings where affiliate staff can meet as peers to share their best work and lessons, and deliver trainings that increase our network’s capacity in the field.

The CE and Politics Manager will work as part of our Politics Team, supporting national strategy, but also investing heavily in the state by state priorities of our network affiliates, traveling frequently and identifying resources and opportunities for affiliates to improve their work. This position will run the Political Directors Cohort, in which lead political staff of each organization gather several times per year to share strategies and learn from each other. Working with our Data Director, the position will help our partners’ take advantage of the best voter technologies, and data to conduct their programs. The Manager will also work closely with  our Organizing and Capacity-Building Team to coordinate programs offering support to affiliates.

Primary Responsibilities

The National Civic Engagement and Politics Manager will:

  • Convene and Facilitate the Political Directors Learning Community, made up of 30-40 Political leads from affiliates;

  • Travel extensively to affiliate organizations to support political plan development, support and implementation;

  • Serve as the lead staff identifying and confirming civic engagement training for affiliates; 

  • Provide 1-on-1 strategic and tactical advice to affiliates and to national staff on civic engagement strategies;  

  • Support the consolidation of a “Political Organizing Model” across affiliates and the network as a whole, through consultation, documentation and electoral analysis

  • Coordinate with CPD program staff in other issue areas to find opportunities for aligned work and cross-campaign coordination.

Job Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Commitment to social and racial justice issues, building the power of communities and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;

  • Minimum of 7+ years of integrated civic engagement experience at local, state levels;  

  • Experience developing annual and multi-year electoral plans for community organizations, including ballot initiatives, independent expenditures for/against candidates, GOTV, voter registration efforts;

  • Experience with the wide range of electoral tactics employed by community organizations, including canvassing, phonebanking, direct mail, SMS, digital ads, earned media, volunteer and paid operations;

  • Familiarity with legal frameworks for 501c3 and 501c4 eligible activities

  • Excellent relationship-building skills with significant experience building and sustaining working relationships across geography and with community leaders and organizers of color;

  • Experience with front of the room participatory meeting and training facilitation

  • Significant project management experience and the ability to juggle multiple projects at a time and work in a fast-paced work environment;  

  • Independent self-starter and go-getter who can drive projects and teams internally and externally;

  • Excellent writing and communication skills; and

  • Experience with fundraising preferred.

National Democracy Manager, Voting Rights & Democracy Program

About the Position:

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action (CPD/CPDA) is seeking an experienced organizer and advocate to help drive national program development and support federal, state and local campaign development on a range of issues, including automatic voter registration, rights restoration, public financing, redistricting and other innovative democracy reforms. The National Democracy Manager will work as part of our Voting Rights and Democracy team and work closely with our state affiliates across the country, as well as other allied state and national organizations to develop, support and implement program strategies, policy development and advocacy. The National Democracy Manager will support the Director of Voting Rights and Democracy in developing and executing strategies to support democracy work including fundraising, affiliate capacity building, building and maintaining national relationships and campaign development. This position will report to the Director of Voting Rights and Democracy.

Primary Responsibilities

The National Democracy Manager will:

  • Help the drive assessment & planning for prospective/potential future campaigns and program activities;

  • Work with Director, VR&D Team, state partners and close national allies to develop and execute national strategies to advance a multi-issue democracy reform agenda at the state, federal and local level;

  • Serve as the primary lead for CPD’s federal policy advocacy and campaign work;  

  • Support the development and fundraising efforts for state affiliate democracy efforts including state and local campaigns;  

  • Support and help manage Campaign Manager’s work with state affiliates on a range of state and local money in politics and voting rights campaigns;

  • Provide strategic and technical campaign assistance including field, communications, policy and legislative strategy to meet the federal and support state campaign goals and priorities of active democracy campaigns;

  • Work with targeted state affiliates to expand the participation and leadership of communities of color and low-income communities in state and local advocacy efforts to advance proactive democracy reforms;  

  • Help build tools to use across state campaigns including campaign tools, training, communication/messaging materials and evaluations to use across state campaigns; and

  • Coordinate with CPD program staff in other issue areas to find opportunities for aligned work and cross-campaign coordination.

Job Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Commitment to social and racial justice issues, building the power of communities and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families; 

  • Minimum of 10+ years of strategic issue advocacy experience including developing programs and strategies to advance policy reform at the national and state level;  

  • Experience developing multi-faceted national and multi-state strategies that include policy research, issue advocacy, organizing and communities;

  • Experience running legislative issue campaigns or ballot initiatives, including developing state-level issue campaign plans that include lobbying, grassroots mobilization, field, fundraising communications and policy implementation strategies;

  • Familiarity with voting rights and/or money in politics policy and advocacy;

  • Excellent relationship-building skills with significant experience building and sustaining diverse coalitions to advocate for policy change;

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a broad and diverse set of state partners, allies and others;

  • Experience facilitating planning processes with diverse stakeholders and leaders;

  • Significant project management experience and the ability to juggle multiple projects at a time and work in a fast-paced work environment;  

  • Independent self-starter and go-getter who can drive projects and teams internally and externally;

  • Experience working in diverse communities and with grassroots organizations;

  • Excellent writing and communication skills; and

  • Experience with fundraising preferred.

National Organizer

About the Position

CPD/CPDA is seeking a National Organizer to work closely with CPD/A affiliates and CPD/A campaign staff to build out thoughtful and meaningful direct actions to build campaign momentum and strategic interventions; build the capacity of affiliate leaders through training, toolkits and resource creation, coaching and program development and; create a connection between federal issues campaign and local work through campaign planning and direct action in Washington DC and in the states. As a member of CPD/A’s Campaigns Team, the National Organizer will lead efforts to grow and strengthen the organizational capacity of our network and affiliates to host and participate in direct action. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Partner with CPD/A Campaigns Teams, in particular, Immigrant Rights, Education Justice, Voting Rights and Democracy, Tax and Budget, and Innovations, to build and execute actions, both in DC and in states, that center racial justice and advance the narratives of their work;
  • Provide leadership and organizing capacity to the Federal People’s Process on decarceration through the Freedom to Thrive campaign;
  • Work with CPD/A affiliates to establish and/or build out direct action programs;
  • Work with the Public Affairs and Strategic Communications department to build  the narrative of why direct action is important to winning social change campaigns
  • Engage with the larger social  justice movement to build transformational and deeply collaborative partnerships;
  • Work directly with issue campaign leads teams to ensure cross campaign communication and skills sharing. 
  • Fundraise, with support and coaching from team members.

Job Requirements

  • At least 2 years experience in direct actions, organizing, and leadership development 
  • Commitment to leadership development, especially of those most impacted;
  • Willingness to travel to support affiliates in person, to engage in network events and to participate in learning, professional development, relationship building and/or fundraising;
  • Deep familiarity with working from an anti-oppression lens in pursuit of justice and radical inclusion;
  • Vision, creativity, enthusiasm and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience working across departments within an organization
  • Success as an independent, self-motivated leader with an ability to drive projects to completion in a fast-paced environment
