Required Skills and Abilities

The Organizing Director is a self-motivated and detail-oriented critical thinker with a strong track record of successfully managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently. S/he is committed to the principles of social justice, has a strong leadership background, and knows how to manage assignments and solve problems quickly and efficiently.

The Organizing Director possesses excellent planning and organizational skills, excellent time management skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and strong written and oral communication skills. Ideally, s/he must have at least five to ten years of related organizing experience and is proficient in office software, database software, and web-based communication/collaboration tools.

Position Responsibilities

The Organizing Director reports to the Executive Director. S/he plays a key role on a talented and dedicated team that minimizes weaknesses, shares strengths and maintains high standards. S/he is able to work effectively with diverse staff, leaders, partners, and the general public. The Organizing Director:

  • Develops and implements quarterly campaign/work plans and a yearly professional development plan

  • Functions as a member of the senior management team, training team, and other teams as assigned
  • Oversees the successful development and management of all organizing campaigns, including strategizing and cutting issues for short- and long-term campaigns on local, regional and state platforms
  • Works with team leads to manage organizing staff and oversee the recruitment and training of organizers
  • Oversees the successful development and management of the organization’s leadership base, including the production of turnout for statewide leadership meetings, direct actions and community meetings
  • Integrates community organizing with long-term, community-driven policy change efforts
  • Prepares weekly reports, campaign briefs, meeting summaries, and all related materials as required
  • Assists communications staff with campaign framing and messaging, including collaborating on talking points, press releases, reports, blogs, social media, and other communications materials as necessary
  • Assists development staff with membership and fundraising efforts, including the solicitation of dues, event sponsorships, foundation grants and individual donations as necessary
  • Attends and actively participate in team and statewide meetings, meet at least biweekly with campaign supervisor, submit all reports in a timely manner, and attend professional organizer trainings as required
  • Performs all other duties as required

Position Details

The Organizing Director is a full-time position. A Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience is required. Salary is dependent upon experience, and includes health/dental insurance, vacation, and retirement match.

The Organizing Director must be bondable, possess an Ohio driver’s license, and have access to a reliable Automobile. In-state and national travel is required. Work-related expenses are reimbursed according to policy. OOC is an equal-opportunity employer.

Economic Justice Organizer - SPACEs in Action

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The EJO will report to the Executive Director of SPACEs In Action/SIA and will:

  • Work with leaders to build and implement the strategic vision for emerging campaigns to address the issue of generational poverty in the DC metro region.
  • • Build a base of community leaders and leader-driven teams
  • In partnership with others, research and define what will constitute a campaign “win” and secure support of the campaign
  • As part of the larger effort described above, make a substantive contribution to a local community campaign and our national opportunities. This entails functioning as the staff lead for one local organizing campaign. And having primary responsibility for outreach, recruitment and turnout with respect to the local and national campaigns.
  • Provide assorted training to individual leaders and partner organizations with respect to outreach and recruitment, campaigns and strategic communications, just to name a few topics.
  • Cultivate relationships with and represent SIA in assorted city-wide and region-wide coalitions and alliances. This may entail significant local travel between and among the jurisdictions that encompass the Washington, DC metropolitan area. And will require that the EJO own or have access to a private vehicle to facilitate local travel
  • Serve as a compelling – and, when necessary, provocative — spokesperson for a unique approach to addressing concentrated and generational poverty.

Experience

  • Knowledge of community organizing and issue campaigns — at least one year —including but not limited to one-on-one relational meetings, power mapping, direct action, training, group management/facilitation and outreach and recruitment.
  • At least one year of experience working within a not-for-profit social justice organization.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of strategic campaign planning.
  • Effective understanding of the dynamics of race and racism in the U.S. and how both play out with respect to individuals and institutions (systems and structures).
  • Effective customer service skills. Ability to communicate with volunteer leaders and organizational staff with sensitivity. Experience in dealing with a variety of personalities and educational levels.
  • A strong track record of outreach and leader engagement in campaigns, mobilizing people into action, and building community leadership.
  • Knowledge of how to develop a power analysis and campaign strategy.
  • A strong unwavering commitment to addressing concentrated and generational poverty through organizing and building people power to win.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, strong analysis of systemic oppression based on race, class, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, and an understanding of challenges facing communities of color and low-and moderate-income families.

  • Dedication and ability to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends)
  • Excellent organizational skills and good attention to detail

  • A high level of self-motivation and a proven ability to work independently, as well as, collaboratively

  • Comfortable working in community and organizational environments characterized by VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity). If you require predictability in your day-to-day work and rigid systems, this position may not be for you.

Organizational Relationships

  • The EJO will work closely with: a) Executive Director of SIA; and b) volunteer community leaders and organizational partners.

Physical Demands

  • Job requires an ability to stand or ‘be on your feet’ for at least 3 consecutive hours for the purpose of performing outreach and recruitment tasks and/or group facilitation/training. Job also requires an ability to stand at a copy machine or other device for 30 minutes or more. Lastly, the job requires significant local travel within the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Thus, the Lead Organizer should expect to spend anywhere from 30 to 60 consecutive minutes operating a vehicle.

Work Environment

  • The EJO will work out of the SPACEs office in Washington, D.C. The office is handicap accessible and ergonomically friendly. In addition, it has adequate lighting and AC/heating conditions. The Organizer will occupy a desk or cubicle in an environment that has a low level of background noise.

About the Position

We seek an energetic Hartford Community Organizer who will have the primary responsibility of building and supporting the parent committee (Madres Guerreras) thru base building, leadership development and executing a local campaign to guarantee language access to immigrant parents within Hartford Public Schools. Secondary responsibilities will be to further develop a rapid response plan and network. We seek a candidate to have one year of experience in outreach to community members, coordination of local actions and mobilization for statewide actions. Candidate will grow into engaging allies across the state and the city to advance our organizational power. The Hartford Community Organizer will report to the Organizing Director.

Primary Responsibilities

Community Organizer will be responsible for

  • Identifying, recruiting and developing community members.

  • Facilitate committee meetings and develop members to facilitate their meetings.

  • Develop and implement campaign work plans.

  • Plan local actions with parent strategy committee.

  • Develop testimonies with members for press.

  • Work with directly impacted people to give testimonies that advance our campaigns.

  • Navigate community and political relationships and empower parent leaders to do this for their own committee. 

  • Develop political education materials in conjunction with our campaigns and facilitate regular political education workshops as part the parent committee meetings.

  • Collaborate with the Bridgeport parent committee to build our statewide power.

  • Develop a leadership pipeline that sustain parent leader and activist growth and ensuring that members are taking leads on outreach, popular education training and other work that they are doing through 1-1s, phone banking, and parent KYR trainings. 

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Point person for rapid response in the Harford area.

  • Develop a data base for Hartford story collections.

  • Foster relationships with immigration attorneys and advocacy groups.

  • Conduct immigration know your rights presentations.

  • Recruitment, confirmation, and follow up for Hartford Immigration Legal Clinics.

  • Take lead on addressing immigration issues and concerns during monthly general meetings.

  • Be able to work in a fast and start up environment.

  • Continuously seek opportunities to organize around housing rights or worker’s issues. 

Qualifications

The Community Organizer must have the following:

  • At least 1 years of experience in community, labor, or other relevant organizing fields.

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, community organizing, leadership development and the elevation of directly impacted and marginalized people to create change.

  • Speaking and writing in English/Spanish is required. 

  • A car and driver’s license is required. 

  • Ability to manage simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment at a growing organization. 

  • Ability to travel between Hartford and Bridgeport on a regular basis.

Position Description

This is a full-time, salaried position organizing construction workers. This work will be carried out in the community and at workers’ homes and workplaces to organize workers to join a movement fighting for fair wages and working conditions for themselves and others. This includes meeting new workers, identifying potential leaders, and developing leadership to build power in their workplace and in their communities. It also includes supporting workers who are experiencing wage theft at work to communicate with employers to win back stolen wages and highlight their victories.

General Requirements

Construction Worker organizer (90% of work)

  • Find new workers at work and at their homes
  • Set up 1-1 meetings with workers identified at work and through other contacts

  • Be persistent obtaining commitments from workers
  • Get workers to take action, take risks in confronting their boss
  • Develop meeting agendas and facilitate meetings to engage construction workers
  • Build CTUL’s membership and collect membership contributions

  • Participate in creating new strategic ideas on how to engage workers

CTUL general support (10% of time)

  • Perform tasks as part of the team that develop leadership with all workers in CTUL’s base

National Civic Engagement and Politics Manager

About the Position:

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action (CPD/CPDA) is seeking an experienced electoral organizer to run a sophisticated training and support program for political staffers of our affiliates around the country. The CE and Politics Manager will support our affiliates to develop and implement their political plans (c3 and c4), develop and coordinate gatherings where affiliate staff can meet as peers to share their best work and lessons, and deliver trainings that increase our network’s capacity in the field.

The CE and Politics Manager will work as part of our Politics Team, supporting national strategy, but also investing heavily in the state by state priorities of our network affiliates, traveling frequently and identifying resources and opportunities for affiliates to improve their work. This position will run the Political Directors Cohort, in which lead political staff of each organization gather several times per year to share strategies and learn from each other. Working with our Data Director, the position will help our partners’ take advantage of the best voter technologies, and data to conduct their programs. The Manager will also work closely with  our Organizing and Capacity-Building Team to coordinate programs offering support to affiliates.

Primary Responsibilities

The National Civic Engagement and Politics Manager will:

  • Convene and Facilitate the Political Directors Learning Community, made up of 30-40 Political leads from affiliates;

  • Travel extensively to affiliate organizations to support political plan development, support and implementation;

  • Serve as the lead staff identifying and confirming civic engagement training for affiliates; 

  • Provide 1-on-1 strategic and tactical advice to affiliates and to national staff on civic engagement strategies;  

  • Support the consolidation of a “Political Organizing Model” across affiliates and the network as a whole, through consultation, documentation and electoral analysis

  • Coordinate with CPD program staff in other issue areas to find opportunities for aligned work and cross-campaign coordination.

Job Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Commitment to social and racial justice issues, building the power of communities and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families;

  • Minimum of 7+ years of integrated civic engagement experience at local, state levels;  

  • Experience developing annual and multi-year electoral plans for community organizations, including ballot initiatives, independent expenditures for/against candidates, GOTV, voter registration efforts;

  • Experience with the wide range of electoral tactics employed by community organizations, including canvassing, phonebanking, direct mail, SMS, digital ads, earned media, volunteer and paid operations;

  • Familiarity with legal frameworks for 501c3 and 501c4 eligible activities

  • Excellent relationship-building skills with significant experience building and sustaining working relationships across geography and with community leaders and organizers of color;

  • Experience with front of the room participatory meeting and training facilitation

  • Significant project management experience and the ability to juggle multiple projects at a time and work in a fast-paced work environment;  

  • Independent self-starter and go-getter who can drive projects and teams internally and externally;

  • Excellent writing and communication skills; and

  • Experience with fundraising preferred.

National Democracy Manager, Voting Rights & Democracy Program

About the Position:

The Center for Popular Democracy/CPD Action (CPD/CPDA) is seeking an experienced organizer and advocate to help drive national program development and support federal, state and local campaign development on a range of issues, including automatic voter registration, rights restoration, public financing, redistricting and other innovative democracy reforms. The National Democracy Manager will work as part of our Voting Rights and Democracy team and work closely with our state affiliates across the country, as well as other allied state and national organizations to develop, support and implement program strategies, policy development and advocacy. The National Democracy Manager will support the Director of Voting Rights and Democracy in developing and executing strategies to support democracy work including fundraising, affiliate capacity building, building and maintaining national relationships and campaign development. This position will report to the Director of Voting Rights and Democracy.

Primary Responsibilities

The National Democracy Manager will:

  • Help the drive assessment & planning for prospective/potential future campaigns and program activities;

  • Work with Director, VR&D Team, state partners and close national allies to develop and execute national strategies to advance a multi-issue democracy reform agenda at the state, federal and local level;

  • Serve as the primary lead for CPD’s federal policy advocacy and campaign work;  

  • Support the development and fundraising efforts for state affiliate democracy efforts including state and local campaigns;  

  • Support and help manage Campaign Manager’s work with state affiliates on a range of state and local money in politics and voting rights campaigns;

  • Provide strategic and technical campaign assistance including field, communications, policy and legislative strategy to meet the federal and support state campaign goals and priorities of active democracy campaigns;

  • Work with targeted state affiliates to expand the participation and leadership of communities of color and low-income communities in state and local advocacy efforts to advance proactive democracy reforms;  

  • Help build tools to use across state campaigns including campaign tools, training, communication/messaging materials and evaluations to use across state campaigns; and

  • Coordinate with CPD program staff in other issue areas to find opportunities for aligned work and cross-campaign coordination.

Job Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Commitment to social and racial justice issues, building the power of communities and understanding of challenges facing immigrant communities, communities of color, and low-and moderate income families; 

  • Minimum of 10+ years of strategic issue advocacy experience including developing programs and strategies to advance policy reform at the national and state level;  

  • Experience developing multi-faceted national and multi-state strategies that include policy research, issue advocacy, organizing and communities;

  • Experience running legislative issue campaigns or ballot initiatives, including developing state-level issue campaign plans that include lobbying, grassroots mobilization, field, fundraising communications and policy implementation strategies;

  • Familiarity with voting rights and/or money in politics policy and advocacy;

National Organizer

About the Position

CPD/CPDA is seeking a National Organizer to work closely with CPD/A affiliates and CPD/A campaign staff to build out thoughtful and meaningful direct actions to build campaign momentum and strategic interventions; build the capacity of affiliate leaders through training, toolkits and resource creation, coaching and program development and; create a connection between federal issues campaign and local work through campaign planning and direct action in Washington DC and in the states. As a member of CPD/A’s Campaigns Team, the National Organizer will lead efforts to grow and strengthen the organizational capacity of our network and affiliates to host and participate in direct action. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Partner with CPD/A Campaigns Teams, in particular, Immigrant Rights, Education Justice, Voting Rights and Democracy, Tax and Budget, and Innovations, to build and execute actions, both in DC and in states, that center racial justice and advance the narratives of their work;
  • Provide leadership and organizing capacity to the Federal People’s Process on decarceration through the Freedom to Thrive campaign;
  • Work with CPD/A affiliates to establish and/or build out direct action programs;
  • Work with the Public Affairs and Strategic Communications department to build  the narrative of why direct action is important to winning social change campaigns
  • Engage with the larger social  justice movement to build transformational and deeply collaborative partnerships;
  • Work directly with issue campaign leads teams to ensure cross campaign communication and skills sharing. 
  • Fundraise, with support and coaching from team members.

Job Requirements

  • At least 2 years experience in direct actions, organizing, and leadership development 
  • Commitment to leadership development, especially of those most impacted;
  • Willingness to travel to support affiliates in person, to engage in network events and to participate in learning, professional development, relationship building and/or fundraising;
  • Deep familiarity with working from an anti-oppression lens in pursuit of justice and radical inclusion;
  • Vision, creativity, enthusiasm and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience working across departments within an organization
  • Success as an independent, self-motivated leader with an ability to drive projects to completion in a fast-paced environment
